From Stuck to Strong: How Sue Lost 14kg & Found Her Confidence Through Fasting
Sep 05, 2025
Meet Sue Costello from Taupo. At the beginning of the year, Sue was feeling frustrated with weight gain and inflammation in her joints – something so many of us can relate to. Fast forward just a few months, and she’s lost 14kg and over 30cm! Even more importantly, she’s gained back her confidence and energy. This week I had a chat to Sue about how she did it – it's been life changing.
Q: What problems were you facing at the time Sue before starting your fasting journey?
Mainly gradual weight gain and inflammation from arthritis. I wanted to lose weight and feel better about myself.
Q: What made you decide to join the tribe back in January?
It kept coming up on Facebook, and after watching the videos and seeing your posts, I thought it sounded like exactly what I needed so I decided to give it a go.
Q: Had you ever tried fasting before?
No, never. I was always someone who had breakfast first thing in the morning. It felt strange at first, but it was so easy.
Q: Were you at a point where you were open to trying something new?
Yes, definitely. I didn’t want my weight and inflammation to keep increasing. I had done low carb before and lost about 10 kilos, but when I went back to carbs and sugar, the weight slowly crept back on.
Q: Where did you start with fasting?
I began by pushing breakfast out to 10 or 10:30, then gradually to lunchtime. Some days I break my fast at 11:30, other days at 1:00. It was much easier than I expected.
Q: Did you have to make major changes to your lifestyle?
Yes, I cut out flour, sugar, potatoes, rice, and switched to healthier whole food alternatives. I also changed all my cleaning products to reduce toxins as you suggested in the tribe to get rid of the nasty chemicals. My husband still eats carbs, but we’ve both made changes – he’s even lost weight too.
Q: What results have you experienced?
I’ve lost 14 kilos and over 30 centimeters in my measurements. The biggest change is my self-confidence. I feel so much better in myself. I get out of the shower in the morning and now really like what I see as before I didn't.
Q: How did joining the tribe support your fasting journey?
The Facebook group and your daily videos really kept me accountable. I knew I had support and could ask questions anytime. That encouragement made all the difference.
Q: What parts of the membership were the most helpful?
The modules – I just followed those and learning the science behind fasting was huge. Understanding why it worked made it easy to stick with. The recipes in your membership were also a big help.
Q: What kept you motivated?
Two things: seeing the weight come off and having accountability within the tribe. Knowing I wasn’t doing it alone kept me going.
Q: Did you make changes to exercise?
Not really. I walk my dog, garden a little, and I’m active at work as a pharmacy technician. But my results came mostly from fasting and food changes.
Q: Did you face any challenges?
Bread was the hardest. I love it, and I haven’t found the perfect substitute yet but know there are new recipes to try in the membership. I do allow myself bread when I go out for breakfast with my husband on Sundays, that's been our ritual and we still enjoy it – it’s about balance.
Q: Did fasting help with your knee surgery recovery that you've recently had?
Yes. Losing 14 kilos has taken pressure off my knees, and being in a healthier state can only help recovery.
Q: Is this a lifestyle change for you?
Definitely. This isn’t a start–stop diet, it’s sustainable for life.
Q: Are you at your goal weight?
Yes. I’m 69kg now, down from 83kg, and at 5 foot 9 – 5 foot 10, I don’t want to lose more.
Q: Do you think you could you have done this on your own?
No. I would have given up without the support and tools in the tribe.
Q: What advice would you give to someone starting fasting?
Join the tribe – it gives you accountability, resources, and support. Also, don’t be hard on yourself. Allow a treat now and then, otherwise it’s too easy to fall off track. Stay disciplined, but be kind to yourself. Put yourself first and give it a good go.
Q: How do you feel about your journey now?
I feel proud, confident, and happy. People have noticed, and while I see more wrinkles now, I'm proud of them and what I've achieved and know that this is a lifestyle change that I can keep to.
